Arriving at the decision to do a little reorganisation, redecoration or remodelling of your kitchen can sometimes seem like you are cooking up a storm of problems. If you’ve ever felt too overwhelmed to try an overhaul of the kitchen, this approach to the challenge might help.

Rather than contemplating the kitchen as one big project, break it down into small, manageable and practical mini-projects. Trying to do everything at once is a sure-fire way to get you hot under the collar without being anywhere near an oven.

To begin with, have a plan. Focus on what you want to achieve with certain aspects of the kitchen by answering a few basic questions.

What do you need to improve?

It’s not always the case that each part of your kitchen calls for improvement. You have thoughts of what you’d like done but occasionally financial constraints won’t allow it therefore be honest and realistic about what has to change. A quick reorganisation of the kitchen will usually enable you to understand what’s lacking or what needs adding to.

Do you have adequate storage?

Most people will answer ‘no’ to this question since we generally all want additional places to store things. Nevertheless, despite an entire redesign you might find space is tight (particularly in smaller galley kitchens) so consider what extra kind of storage you need – more space for kitchen appliances? Extra storage for food? Extra wine storage? Spice racks?

New units?

In a perfect world it would be nice to have totally new kitchen units however the time and cost involved may be prohibitive to some people. Fear not, a major overhaul of your cupboards isn’t always necessary and you are able to produce a dramatic transformation simply by painting existing units or by replacing doors or door furniture. Of course, if money and time is not the issue, new units can set the style and tone of the kitchen – just consider how the new look integrates with the rest of your home.

What do you do in your kitchen?

Not such an unusual question to ask but maybe it requires breaking down into parts:

Do you like to cook? In which event you need a good food preparation area and all your appliances within a practical distance. If cooking a large meal is currently a major hassle then maybe it’s time for a more substantial range cooker and some more work surface space. If space is tight take full advantage of what you have with extra worktop storage.

Is it the family hub? For many families, the kitchen is where everybody congregates so perhaps a central island can be built to give you additional countertop space, storage and somewhere for everybody to sit and stay out of the way!

Does the kitchen have a dual purpose? In some homes the kitchen is also a place to study or entertain. If that’s the case you’ll want a larger area for eating or even a separate desk for working at.

Have you thought about the walls?

One of the dramatic modifications you can make to any room in your home is a change of wall colour and the same applies to the kitchen. Kitchen wallpaper goes one step further than mere colour by adding textures if you wish. Wallpapering is a cost-effective way to create a new design but with the least effort. You’ll be amazed how much difference it makes when the walls are redone.

Hopefully these tips will go some way to making the process of redoing the kitchen slightly easier. Go to it with a positive attitude and a plan and you’ll have a new look faster than you think!

If you’re thinking of decorating, the hallway can be the forgotten area of the home since it is usually seen as a space to be passed through to be able to reach connecting areas. Being a ‘transient space’ has its disadvantages as homeowners would rather spend time, money and effort on decorating ‘living spaces’. That’s a real shame because it’s the first part of your house that visitors are greeted by and who doesn’t want to create the best first impression? With some forward planning, the right wallcoverings, lighting and storage, your hallway can acquire the wow! factor.

Colours and coverings

Selecting the most appropriate colours can help make the entrance to your home as light and attractive as possible. Dark hallways can be a bad idea in smaller homes so heavy and strong colours on the wall need to be avoided. On the other hand, should you live in a period property that has far more space, then classic colours that are in keeping with the general décor (like greens and reds) can enrich the look. For narrow spaces, select neutral colours on the wall.

Changing the colour on the walls will make a significant impact on the sense of space. Some people like to continue the colour scheme used in connecting rooms while others select a colour that complements and gives a different look. Wallpaper has undergone a huge design revolution recently and wallcoverings with neutral colours and embossed designs look fantastic. If you’d rather paint but need a cool feel, wall stickers can bring some interest to the walls.

Adding to the walls

With many hallways being narrow and long there’s usually a premium on floor space so utilise the walls to create your design statement. A properly placed mirror reflects light and helps to make your hallway look bigger – given the space is the entrance/exit point of the home, a mirror also allows everyone to check how they look when coming or going.

Photos are also a great idea to give your home an individual touch. Black and white prints offer a real chic appearance while a selection of different sized photo frames give your hallway a gallery feel. If you’re going to add a piece of art to the walls, make sure it will be lit correctly to benefit from the full effect – a long, narrow picture light will provide you with the right look.

Get the right light

As with other spaces in your house, natural light is always preferable so if possible use glazing in interior doors to permit light to enter the hallway from other rooms. For artificial light you’ll want to consider the height of your ceilings. For people with low ceilings, wall uplighters will give the impression of height while for taller hallways you can install feature lighting like pendant lights or a luxurious chandelier.

Storage space

As you enter and exit the home you will need a place to hang up your coat, pick up your keys and grab your shoes and bags so a few hallway storage pieces can make life easier, keep everything tidy and look great too.

For your hats and coats, wall hooks are ideal for compact spaces while a coat stand looks great if you have more floor space to play with. Keep all your keys, letters and small items to hand with a wall storage unit and prevent people tripping over discarded shoes with a shoe storage unit

Servicing an Aga cooker. Gas, Electric and Oil burning ovens require a regular service and maintenance.

An Aga cooker is designed and built to offer you hassle-free operation for a life time. The materials and build quality of these renowned cookers are second to none hence why it will probably be the only oven that you’re ever likely to own. After installation it will function tirelessly to give you all the great benefits that only these superb ovens can bring nevertheless like most appliances a service shedule and regular maintenance is required.

Some regular love and attention will ensure your cooker is consistently functioning at its best, its safest and its most effective. Agas are very basic machines which is just one of the reasons why they last so long – the less complicated the operating parts, the longer the lifespan. Any issues that arise with the oven will more than likely have a straightforward solution to correct them. Nevertheless, there are a couple more complicated bits that go into one of these classic ovens.

A few people undertake a DIY service but quickly run into difficulties if they tinker with something that is unfamiliar. Before they know it, a part that was functioning perfectly before it was fiddled with has stopped working resulting in a call to a professional to correct the problem. Not only do they end up without a completely functioning oven, they’ve also had to spend out more than a proper service would have cost.

In order to avoid unnecessary time and financial expense, it is advisable to book regular Aga servicing from an authorised company that employs a team of engineers who are able to service all electric, gas and oil versions to an extremely high standard.

Gas – Any gas appliance on your property must be serviced on an annual basis to ensure it is working safely and a gas Aga is no different. If you have a dual-fuel model, the same is applicable as the burners, pressure, flue system and ventilation will all necessitate annual servicing.

Oil – While gas appliances should be serviced every year, an oil Aga will need servicing every 6 months. A service will check that the fuel rate, oil line and storage tank are operating as they should.

Electric – Electric models ought to be serviced every year to ensure their safety. Should you own a 30amp model a certified engineer will check for safety and operation. 13amp models can be checked every five years.

Once your service is booked in you will must make sure that the oven is cool before the engineer arrives so power it down the previous night – if it’s still hot the service can not be carried out. The engineer will carry out certain actions that are specific to your model and fuel type (see above) but they will also check that all safety devices are functioning.

Any rope seals or gaskets will be inspected and replaced if required. The engineer will adjust the operation of the insulating lids and doors and check the insulation level (this will be topped up if necessary). The engineer will also clean the circulation and/or oven venting fans.

When you look for a company to service your oven, make sure that their engineers have been fully trained and also have OFTEC and GAS SAFE registration.

How to look after an Aga cooker. Aga cleaning, maintenance and servicing for gas, oil and solid fuel burning Aga ovens.

The Aga cooker is the most durable oven on the market due to its cast iron casing and multiple layers of enamel protecting the surfaces. The Aga is such a solid construction that you’re only ever likely to own one in your lifetime (it’s highly likely that it will outlive you!). However, like most things in life, an Aga oven requires a little bit of tender loving care to keep it functioning and looking its absolute best. In this article we’ll explain what you should do to look after your Aga.

Aga maintenance

The maintenance required for an Aga is not as difficult as you may think and a bit of common sense will keep it operating with few problems. One of the main causes of damage can come from small spillages while cooking. Some Aga models work as heat storage units which means they are always on. This provides a great way to slow cook food and keep the flavours in but any spillages that haven’t been wiped away immediately dry and stain the surfaces very quickly.

Always clean up any mess before this can happen and ensure you use Aga approved cleaning products or you could damage the appearance of your oven. Be careful when cleaning the hotplates though as you could scold yourself. Any substance that spills onto the hotplate will eventually carbonise so you can simply brush it away.

As with the home, an Aga range cooker can get a bit grimy over time with grease, fat and other substances accumulating in the nooks and crannies. Make sure you give your Aga a bit of spring clean every so often but don’t tackle it all at once as it will soon become tiresome and you won’t do the best job possible. Take on a specific area each day until you’ve got it gleaming again.

Aga servicing

When it comes to servicing, think of your Aga as you would your car and have a regular service booked in. Most people choose to service their Aga cooker every couple of years but a yearly service is prudent. An Aga stove that burns oil definitely needs regular servicing due to the way pipes feed oil into the burners. Small carbon deposits can build up inside causing a drop in performance and efficiency and the potential for total malfunction.

A gas burning Aga should have a yearly service while a solid fuel burner converted oven will need a good sweep down every six months with the main chimney swept out annually. Whatever type of energy source you use to power your Aga, a regular service will keep your oven and stove running smoothly and reduce the likelihood of an expensive repair bill should something go wrong.

An Aga is for life…

With these simple maintenance tips, proper cleaning plus regular servicing you’ll be able to keep your Aga running smoothing and enjoy worry-free cooking for life. Speak to an Aga dealer to ensure you get the right products and servicing plan.

Ethical gifts and tips for cooking and dining. Organic and natural products for food lovers, the kitchen and the home.

You might say that ‘ethical cooking’ is a strange term but when you think about it you’re probably already following a set of ethics every time you cook a meal. There was a time when free-range eggs were the exception rather than the rule, now of course it is frowned upon to be buying eggs laid by battery hens. If you take a look through your cupboards and you’re likely to find fairtrade or organic products. However there is more you can do. If you, or someone you know, is a keen amateur chef then there are plenty more ways to make cooking even more ethical including buying ethical gifts for the budding Gordon Ramsay in your life.

Ethical cooking and dining

Whether you’re cooking the family meal or you’re having a dinner party for friends, there are a few easy steps you can take to ensure a successful and ethical dinner:

Ingredients

We’ve already mentioned the popularity of free range eggs and sales are now hitting the £2 billion per year mark. Battery egg sales are plummeting and by 2012, eggs laid by caged hens will be a thing of the past as a ban is due to be implemented. All the major supermarkets are joining in to support free range produce because the demand from the public is stronger than ever.

Take an interest in where your ingredients come from and how they were grown or raised. Free range and organic produce is not only more ethically sound, it is also more nutritious which can only be a good thing for health.

Try to buy produce that is in season. We’ve become so used to having any type of fruit and vegetable at any time of the year but the fact remains that buying produce that is in season is more cost-effective, fresher and better for the environment.

Environmental impact

Actively seek out information about your food. ‘Food miles’ is an often used phrase and relates to the distance travelled from source to point of purchase. Be aware however that fuel consumption is not always judged on distance. A container ship full of apples travelling from another country can use less fuel than trucks driving hundreds of miles up and down this country. Buying locally is best to maintain freshness of food but don’t be over-enthusiastic as many poor countries rely on income from fruit and vegetable exports.

If you’re buying fish, find out how it has been caught and whether the stocks are sustainable. Fish is a rapidly depleting food source across the planet and some of the methods involved in fishing are detrimental to animal welfare and the environment.

Meat farming is having a major impact on the environment. While you don’t necessarily have to abstain from eating it, having a few meat free days every week can make a big difference. Did you know that a steak dinner for a family of four is roughly equivalent (energy wise) to driving around in 4×4 family car while leaving all your house lights on.

Grow your own

It is possible to become self-sufficient by growing your own vegetables and fruit. If you’ve a garden, patio or even just a window box, you’ll be amazed at how much you can actually grow yourself. Why not buy an organic garden gift voucher and grow your own tomatoes, peas, courgettes, runner beans and even strawberries.

Serving your food

You can even be ethical in the way you prepare and serve your food. Buy plates, utensils, chopping boards and bowls made from sustainable materials such as bamboo. Bamboo is a fast growing plant which is easily renewable therefore having very little impact on the environment. There are a number of stylish bamboo products for the kitchen and home.

Tips and products for an ethical and fairtrade kitchen. Organic, natural wooden bowls, chopping boards and utensils for the kitchen.

Consider for a moment how much energy is used in your home and you’ll soon realise that the kitchen is probably the main culprit for consumption. The average kitchen will have a fridge/freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster, oven, gas hob, extractor fan and washing machine. Then there are the luxury items such as a dishwasher, coffee maker and electrical labour saving devices for cooking.

All of these appliances drain electric, gas and water which ultimately costs money and has a major impact on the environment. Here are some tips to make your kitchen more ‘green’ plus some Ethical and fair trade kitchen products for cooking and serving your food.

Ethical cooking tips

Cook several dishes in one go – If cooking vegetables on the hob, use a tiered steamer rather than lots of pans. If using the oven, use all the shelves.

When using the oven, try to avoid opening the door too often as the temperature drops by 15°C each time making your oven work harder.

If cooking with pans, keep the lids on as this will use less gas. When bringing the pan to the boil, adjust the flame to the pan’s diameter to avoid heat wastage.

Use a microwave to save time and energy.

Don’t buy too many gadgets – Labour saving devices may look like a good idea but six million end up in landfill each year. If you don’t really need it, don’t buy it.

One product every kitchen needs is a chopping board to prevent damaging your kitchen surfaces when preparing food. The best boards are made from wood but as a natural resource, wood is depleting fast so buy fairtrade bamboo chopping boards. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world and therefore endlessly renewable.

Ethical washing tips

Wash clothes on cooler settings – For most people that’s 40°C although newer machines will now wash at 15°C. A 40°C wash will use a third less power than one at 60°C.

Prewash settings are not necessary so don’t use them.

If you need to buy a new washing machine, choose the smallest one possible for your needs and make sure it has a hot water inlet.

Dishwashers can be economical if used correctly. A full load on an economy setting can use less water than hand washing although bear in mind the electrical usage. If you’re considering buying dishwasher ask yourself if you really do need one.

Rather than buying expensive and chemical-laden cleaning products to remove scale from your dishwasher or washing machine, use a cupful of vinegar on a full cycle (without any clothes or dishes inside though!).

Ethical appliance tips

All new appliances by law must display an energy rating. This is displayed on a scale of A-G with A being the most energy efficient (an ‘energy plus’ model is even more efficient still). If you’re buying a new appliance, always make sure you’re aware of the rating and the materials used in the manufacturing process. Look for CFC and HFC free fridge/freezers and ones with an "R600a" hydrocarbon coolant label.

When disposing of old appliances, check with your local council for a disposal depot which will reuse, recycle or recondition certain parts. This reduces the amount going to landfill.

I’m based in Cheshire and cover the whole of the county and the North Staffordshire area. My contemporary and children’s murals at www.kidswallmurals.co.uk are an exciting and original alternative to wallpaper as well as a cost effective solution to re-decorating a room.

Whether it’s to theme a nursery, update a child’s room or enhance a living space, you can have any style or design, tailored to suit your specific taste and budget.

The Design

As an experienced muralist, all of my murals are drawn free hand with no stencilling or projections involved. This allows me to transfer your ideas directly onto the wall with no scale or design restriction. I can work to all scales and budgets, producing either simple colourful wall murals to enhance a style of room – or completely theme a room in intricate detail. No project is too large or too small, and every project is treated with the same personal care and attention. When producing an interior scheme I can either translate your specific ideas directly or if you would prefer I can produce imaginative design creations for you. You may already have a room decorated and decide you want to take details from a border, curtains or duvet cover and create a mural to finish the room off.

The Price

There are a number of factors to consider that will determine the price of any given mural. The size of the mural, the detail, the wall texture and whether or not there is a ceiling involved – all have an impact on the costs. Prices start from as little as £65.00, so please use my contact page or phone me directly to arrange for a free consultation or guide price over the phone.

I am a fully qualified designer specialising in hand painted murals for interiors. I have always been creative and started painting murals when I was 14 in my own bedroom and then I found all of my friends wanted one. I went on to University and qualified with a Ba Hons in Design – Surface Pattern.

I worked as a designer for commercial companies but when I had my first child I decided that the nursery just had to have a Winnie The Pooh themed mural. As friends started to see my son’s room – my mural business began and it is the most rewarding and satisfying of jobs I have ever done.

As well as painting murals in people homes I have also been commissioned to produce murals for the National Health Service and other commercial properties, which have been featured in the local press.

Following our initial contact by phone, I would arrange to come and meet with you to view the room you intend to have the mural painted in. We would talk through your ideas, and at this stage if you needed inspiration I would also bring along ideas, pictures, and books to look at. For children’s rooms, every child has a favourite cartoon character, theme, TV character or book so this would be our starting point. If your child is old enough I always like to ask what they would like to see in their room so we make sure the mural makes everyone happy.

Once you have decided on the size and design of the mural that’s when I can provide you with an exact cost. My price is always inclusive of all materials and time – so no matter how long it takes me to complete the mural – the price will remain exactly as quoted (prices start from as little as £65).

When I come to paint the mural – the whole design is sketched out on the wall, ceiling or cupboard etc. in pencil first, and it is at this stage that I always make sure the client is completely happy with how the design looks before any painting begins – as once the design is painted changes are hard to make!

Your custom hand painted mural can usually be finished within a few days depending on size and detail level. The paints I use are waterproof and non-toxic and are therefore ideal to be used around children and babies.

Growing bonsai trees is not an expensive hobby with few tools required, but a fine bonsai tree can be much more of a statement in your home than many ornaments can. A bonsai tree is a living ornament.

Bonsai are container planted trees that are developed to be a miniature of of its natural sized counterpart. Bonsai trees can be created from nearly any perennial wood stemmed trees or shrubs that grow branches and can develop in miniature through pot confinement with the aid of crown and root pruning.

Bonsai trees can be developed from seeds, young shoots lifted from the wild, (please have regard for any laws regarding taking wild plants in your area), or can be purchased as ready planted bonsai trees. Although growing bonsai trees from seeds is the slowest route, but you will have total control of how your bonsai tree will grow.

Bonsai are planted in containers that restrict the development of the roots but will also enhance the look of your bonsai. Special soil mixtures can be purchased that provide the ideal environment for your bonsai to grow in.

Many methods are employed to sculpt and give unique character to your bonsai tree including leaf trimming, wiring branches, grafting, dwarfing and deadwood, (a process used to age the bark). Few specialist tools are needed to sculpt bonsai, and these are readily available for little cost. All that you require to start growing bonsai trees can be easily bought from a bonsai nursery.

Bonsai are available as both indoor and outdoor types, some bonsai trees are best if they are left outside in the warmer summer months and then grown inside in the winter.

And for those that like the idea, but doesn’t want to keep bonsai, you can even buy artificial bonsai.

If you are wondering if growing bonsai trees is right for you, I would say have a go, bonsai are simple to grow and maintain, take a small amount of your time, every bonsai is unique, and who does not admire a bonsai tree whenever they see one.

Intex Round Frame Above Ground Pool Set Up

Above ground pools are probably the most popular form of swimming pool today. As the name tells you an above ground swimming pool is a pool that sits above the ground rather than being buried.

Above ground pools provide a number of advantages over their in ground equivalents. One of the key benefits is safety. It is far more difficult for a child or a pet to fall into an above ground pool as they will generally have to climb steps to gain access.

Another key advantage is installation simplicity. Above ground swimming pools generally require far less ground work preparation before construction. In fact many can be built by competent DIY enthusiasts and there are some excellent swimming pool kits that make owning your own pool very affordable.

There are a variety of above ground pool designs to choose from. These include wooden framed pools, metal wall pools and vinyl sided pools. Splasher pools are a great example of easy-to-install, fun backyard swimming pools. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes suitable for most back gardens. From compact circular splasher pools with a depth of only 36 inches to much more substantial elliptical pools that are great for the whole family.

When considering which above ground swimming pool to select it is worth giving some thought to the following:

How big is the area for your swimming pool? Remember that people will need to get around the pool so its necessary to leave adequate clearance.

Who will be using the pool? If the pool is to be used by young children who may not be able to swim it would be sensible to choose a shallower pool.

During which part of the year will the pool be used? Most outdoor swimming pool owners in Europe will often only use their pools during the peak summer months. You can extend the time during which your pool is usable with the insulation provided by a good quality pool enclosure.

What additional accessories will you need for your pool? Often overlooked. You may want a suitable pool heating system, a good pool cover to keep out debris, cleaners, filters and water treatment chemicals.

Armed with this information I would suggest that you then contact at least two reputable swimming pool supply companies with the details of your above ground pool requirements. They will provide some suggestions of above ground swimming pools that fulfil your requirements.

Many people are finding that there has never been a better time to invest in an above ground pool. Competition between pool supply companies is fierce and many people are tightening their belts and not spending on luxury items like swimming pools. Taking the time to shop around will definitely provide you with some serious savings.

For thousands of years the human race has used herbs in a variety of ways. These uses can be categorized into three distinctive groups; religious, culinary and medicinal. In the article below we shall debate each of these categories in order concentrating upon the medicinal uses and essential oils.

Through the ions o time there have been numerous other uses of herbs which we will not be looking at here and these include them being used instead of money, as a disinfectant and as a perfume or powerful smell to smother sickening odours. Herbs originate from many parts of the planet and each race commonly had unusual uses for them. It is interesting to note that the Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Greek and Sumerians, the Romans all wrote about them in detail and other writings exist from Ancient India and China. We shall be focusing on modern uses.

Herbs And Religion

Herbs are still used in various religions around the planet. A large number of Christians will remember myrrh from the Nativity (myrrh is the dried sap of Commiphora myrrha). Hindus will be extremely familiar with the Tulsi plant, which is a species of Basil, as it is cultivated by many and revered as a Goddess. In Wiccan beliefs herbs are used extensively in spells, rituals as well as for healing.

Kitchen Uses of Herbs

The leaves of different plants are used in the kitchen but there is a difference between leafy vegetables, such as cabbage, and a herb, such as parsley, in that the latter are used in very small amounts due to their distinctive, and powerful flavour. Virtually every person in the world has benefited from the these amazing plants which are capable of lifting the blandest meal into the realms of a culinary masterpiece.

The Medicinal Uses of Herbs

As well as being intense in flavor a herb can also have a profound effect upon the human body. Some types are used as recreational drugs, such as cannabis, which can cause legal problems as they can also have useful medical properties which are still being studied by academics.

Essential Oils

An essential oil is the concentrate extracted from a variety of plants. Essential oils are invariably created by the method called distillation but some need a different method of extraction such as by using solvents or expression.

Essential oils have a number of uses, such as perfumes, bath oils, flavourings, burning (for scent) and in cleaning products. However the majority of folk know of their use in medicine and especially in aromatherapy and other forms of alternative medicine. I use lavender oil in a variety of ways, I add it to my mixture for my oil burner to make the room smell nice but I also use about three drops in a bath when I suffer from achy legs. When my limbs are very painful I gently rub it into the muscles but only when it is mixed with a carrier oil. As well as helping to relax the muscles it also helps me sleep better.

Herbs should be handled with with safety in mind as some can be extremely destructive to the human body (in large quantities). Special care should be taken if you are pregnant as something that is otherwise safe could be alarmingly problematic, such as peppermint oil which should never be used in its raw form. However spearmint and a few other mild oils can be used but to avoid the risk of miscarriage I advise that you avoid all herbs and essential oils unless you know for certain they are safe.

The awesome thing about herbs is that growing your own is as hard as buying a herb kit and placing it near a window. To discover more visit http://store.landscapinginfo4u.com/
